Here is a version of the recipe above that I use now. Feel free to substitute the granulated white sugar for another type of sweetener. Other recipes out there use brown sugar, pure maple syrup, or even honey. If you use a liquid sweetener like honey, maple syrup or even molasses, add it to the liquid ingredients then to the flour and shortening mixture.
Stir the dry ingredients together. Cut in the shortening until the mixture is worked well together. In a small bowl, beat the egg, water, and white vinegar together. Add this to the shortening/flour mixture, and form into a ball. Divide into 3 disks, wrap, and chill about an hour before using. This is a large batch, and will make from three to five pie crusts, depending on the size of the pie pan or tart mold.
